IS YOUR RESUME A SLEDGEHAMMER OR A DART?
Remember Your Resume Is A Tool
So, I was working with a person a while ago on their resume - a four page resume which was printed on both sides (hat tip for conserving paper - do the math, it was an eight page resume). They were not getting the response from their resume that they had hoped to get. They had mailed and emailed hundreds of resumes to no avail.
Empowering People to Succeed
Empowerment is a word which is casually tossed around in every day conversations - politics, sports, on the job, church, etc...political figures empower the states, the Cleveland Browns empowered Johnny Manzel, the job empowers you to do your job, and churches empower followers with free will, so on and so forth... So, what does empowerment actually mean? Webster's defines it as "to give power to (someone)."
Perceive, Control and Evaluate Emotions
Do you know how you feel when you anticipate working with a person in any role who has a reputation for being harsh, rude, or difficult? I do. It is easy to dismiss them by saying that type of behavior has no business in the work place. Funny this is, every time you say it, another ill-mannered professional comes through the door.
Make Important Decisions the Right Way
"It's all about people. It's about networking and being nice to people
and not burning any bridges. Your work is going to impress,
but in the end it is people that are going to hire you."
How often have we heard or used the phrase "don't burn bridges." In my mind, it means 'stay classy,' do things the right way, or be the person you would like to be, when dealing with squabbles, terminations, layoffs, etc. Basically, if you are dealing with another person in a negative situation, don't be a jerk, stay classy.
SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO SAY WOW
Impact One Person Every Day
The sign above my desk says "Impact One Person Every Day." some days this is not as easy as it sounds. Days which stick out in the memory are those days when the little impact you may have had is obvious.
LEMON DROP HILL
Don't Quit Now!
So, I am fortunate enough to have a radio show on Saturday mornings. Often, when talking baseball we say - "it is a marathon, not a sprint." Indeed this weekend in Duluth there is a marathon, Grandma's Marathon.
Duluth has many events, but I think this is the biggest - if not the biggest (i.e. Tall Ships, Airshow), it is the oldest event. The one we are most known for. Grandma's Marathon is a big deal.
SOCIAL MEDIA - THE WILD WEST?
Powerful But Dangerous
A coworker stumbles on your computer which is open to your Facebook page. They read a few things and post "HACKED" on your timeline and walk off. Another person spies your smartphone and sees your Twitter account is open and tweets "Never leave your phone alone @localbar#luckyImnotpsycho."
JOB FAIR BEST PRACTICES
Leaving a Strong First Impression
Job fairs are never easy - for either employers or job seekers. Employers are hopeful that they will receive one or two resumes that they can work with. They hope to meet a few people who might be good candidates for openings at their business. They are looking for seekers who meet the level of professionalism the company needs their employees to have.
GETTING A JOB
No Need To Go Through It On Your Own
Getting a job - not as simple as wanting a job. It is actually hard work and it takes a lot of effort. Here is the thing to remember, you do not need to do all the work on your own. Often it feels like you are creating the wheel for the first time, but you have people, places and programs at your fingertips.
NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS 2018
Always one to follow the crowd, I figure putting together a blog which discusses New Year's Resolutions seemed like a logical thing to do. Now is the time to reevaluate where you are headed and start to make changes to improve your stead in life.
Reaching Your Bar
What is potential? Webster's says it is having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future.
Potential can be a blessing or a curse depending on how you look at it. At NEMOJT, one of our tasks is to help people flush out their potential - and then help them reach it.
Overcoming Obstacles in Our Path
Amazing is a word that is really overused, almost to the point of making it meaningless. There are days and times where the action taken by another person is AMAZING in its truest form.
A few days ago Houston was pummeled by Hurricane Harvey. Up to 51" of rain fell on parts of East Texas.
JUST ANOTHER FOGGY, OVERCAST DAY
Always Shoot to Under Promise and Over Deliver
2024 - That is the next time there will be a total eclipse (cue Bonnie Tyler), except maybe here in Duluth. On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total eclipse of the sun happened.
