JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAMS:

Careers with a Purpose
JA Careers with a Purpose introduces students to the importance of seeking careers that help them realize their life potential and noble purpose. The program demonstrates the importance of positive values, life maxims, and ethical decision-making within the context of career and life decisions. Seven required, volunteer-led sessions. Career EdVenture staff will help secure volunteers and work with teachers to establish appropriate scheduling.

Success Skills  
JA Success Skills meets the needs of a diverse group of high school students by providing engaging, academically enriching, and experiential learning sessions in work-readiness education and career perspectives. Includes themes of personal work readiness skills, effective workplace communication, teamwork, problem solving, marketing and interviewing. Seven required, volunteer-led sessions. Career EdVenture staff will help secure volunteers and work with teachers to establish appropriate scheduling.

Business Ethics
JA Business Ethics is designed to foster ethical decision-making in students as they prepare to enter the workforce. Students learn to recognize, analyze, and apply basic terminology, theories, and concepts common to the study of ethics. They explore their own ethical values and philosophy, establish ethical priorities, recognize key ethical issues, and learn to evaluate their decision-making process. Career EdVenture staff will help secure volunteers and work with teachers to establish appropriate scheduling.

Personal Finance
This program introduces students to the importance of making wise financial choices. Students explore the role that money plays in achieving personal goals throughout life. They develop planning, goal setting, and thoughtful decision-making skills that will help them protect themselves from the unexpected financial pitfalls that plague so many adults. Career EdVenture staff will help secure volunteers and work with teachers to establish appropriate scheduling.

The current generation of students has been dubbed by some as the ‘Facebook Generation’. However, many students don’t realize the impact of this social tool on current and future job search endeavors. This presentation, facilitated by Career EdVenture staff, clearly outlines tips for ensuring students are aware of how this powerful mechanism could affect their future lives in ways they haven’t considered. Also included is how to maximize the use of social media tools to land the next job – resources that current students will most certainly regard as a primary means of networking to land a job.
 
This dynamic presentation, facilitated by Career EdVenture staff, helps students understand the language and culture of home, work and school and how they relate to the changing world of work. Students are challenged to think about how their generation interacts with other generations commonly found in the workplace and relates these generational differences to employer expectations. Workshop includes themes of workplace etiquette, teamwork, accountability, and ‘soft skills’, elements that employers consistently cite as areas of major concern for their future workforce.
 
Interviewing is one of the most nerve-wracking experiences we all have yet confidence is key to landing the job. Helping students gain experience in this indispensible skill is critical to their future success and may even save them lost opportunity. Includes commonly asked interview questions and critique during which students gain insight into how employers make hiring decisions. Career EdVenture staff will help school personnel recruit local employers to come in and provide this valuable experiential learning opportunity on a small or large group basis.
 
Career EdVenture will develop events designed to introduce students to local business and industry from an informative standpoint (Career Fair) or gather employers who will consider hiring students for part-time or seasonal work (Job Fair). These formats work best for large groups, but customization is available to suit the needs of the school.
 
Any of the services available through Career EdVenture can be adapted to fit shorter timeframes on a regular basis during after school hours. Many students are not a part of organized sports or other extracurricular activities yet could still benefit from a structured social opportunity to engage in personal career exploration. Career EdVenture staff are available to design an after school program to suit the needs unique of the school and students. Topics might include in-depth career assessments, industry speakers, a host of engaging career exploration games and activities, hands-on demonstrations, and much more.
 
Career EdVenture staff can bring industry experts to your school to educate students about the opportunities that await them. Various formats are available depending on the needs of the school, but could include panel speakers or hands-on demonstrations in key fields such as engineering, healthcare, mining, manufacturing, banking and finance, and more.
 
The unique culture and industry of Northeast Minnesota has resulted in a wide range of innovative entrepreneurial ventures to support existing industries or develop new ones. Working with our partners from the UMD Center for Economic Development and the Entrepreneur Fund, students are introduced to the concept of business ownership and how they can take on a more entrepreneurial mindset in order to take control of their future. Curriculum is based on the Junior Achivement Be Entrepreneurial workshop and is aligned with state academic standards. Length of workshop can be tailored to the needs of the classroom.
 
Through our partner BestPrep, eMentors fosters email mentoring partnerships between professionals and students, leveraging volunteers from almost every career field. The program includes weekly emails based on a series of guiding questions, monitored by teachers, tailored to meet various curricula. Topics such as business, workplace skills, economics, math, financial literacy and science help students understand the relationship between classroom learning and future careers.
